Le Sigh - Charlotte Olympia Garden Trellis Heels Spring 2012

I haven't had the opportunity to see this collection in person, but I don't think it matters. One way or another, I'm going to have to get me a pair of the trellis platforms from Charlotte Olympia's Spring 2011 collection.

I've seen several versions of them, including the lemony sandals with white...

The gold...

and, my personal favorite and hopefully soon acquisition... the palm print with white....

What will I wear with them??? I have no idea! But even if I have to just sit and stare at them or maybe wearing them with my nightgown, I don't care. I love them and need them!

Professional in Pink - The Travel Edition

Travelfor work reasons may not be in your regular job description (as it is in mine) but it's something you may have to deal with. I've mentioned before (in other "Professional" posts) that it's important to find a balance between your style and being appropriate. But that doesn't mean you have to completely lose your identity. Here are just a few words of advice from me to you about keeping your comfort and sanity when traveling for work.

1. Pack Light

This will be a laugh for anyone who knows and has traveled with me. I can be a heavy packer. I like to have options and outfits and shoes for every combination. But that is only when I'm traveling for fun. When it comes to work, I'm want to be dealing with as little as possible because usually I am with others and usually men. So being able to keep mobile and keep up is important.

I can pack for overnight in a small duffel bag and for a week in a pilot case. And with all the hassles between security, luggage costs, limited space on the plane and the fact that everyone is trying to avoid the baggage claim area, it helps to have only a few bags.

This past trip to Atlanta I avoided a coat which made it way easier getting in and out of the security line, the plane and the group car. I had just the small bag above so when the plane stopped letting pilot cases on, I was able to sail through. If you do bring a pilot case, make it hard-sided, as small and light as possible and with 360-degree wheels. I have a small case I never use because it actually weighs more than another pilot case I have that is twice the size. And hard-sided is key. Between baggage handlers and your suitcase sitting out in the rain, a cloth-sided case just won't do. And don't forget the TSA approved lock! I prefer combination ones so I don't have to worry about a key.

But how do you pack so lightly? Well, take a hard look at every single thing you are bringing - I didn't bring a curling iron or a bottle of shampoo. I even just brought my daily vitamin in a small piece of paper rather than bring the bottle.

For clothes I did have another outfit but I only brought the one pair of shoes that I was wearing. I wore a jacket and had new scarves and gloves to mix it up and keep warm. I try to be somewhat neutrally professional with smaller personal style accents.

2. Skip the computer.

If you can avoid bringing your laptop, do so. They're fragile and expensive and, while you may need them for a week, if you are just going overnight you can probably avoid it, especially if your phone or iPad can access the web, your work email and more. Laptops are so much heavier that this saved me tons of effort.

3. Collapsible water bottle

Cheaper and easier and lighter - enough said.

4. Bigger purse

I use an open tote style purse that can easily get into when it's under the seat in front of you and that is big enough to carry your water, iPad (and or book), headphones, a wrap and whatever else you end up shoving in there as you move from gate to plane and back again.

5. Flexible shoes

I don't mean folding flats (although I do throw a pair in my bag). Instead I mean shoes that can take you from morning to night, airport to client dinner, in rain or not and won't leave you a cripple by the end of the night.

The shoe I pick 9 times out of 10? My Aerosole buckle heel shoes. I've worn these walking all over New York during Fashion Week and I just wore them last week. I've had these shoes at least 12 years and they are still looking good. I am not sure what I'm going to do if they ever have a major problem my cobbler can't fix. These heels look dressy enough for suits but fine with heels and have stood up to rainstorms and airport running. They are around 3" high so comfortable for walking.

If you have a pair that meets all of these criteria... buy two pairs! I have this same heel in a claret color. I wish I had second pair of the black.

6. Sleep on the plane

I don't care what anyone else is doing. If you can, sleep on the plane. It can be awkward if you are sitting next to a co-worker to do this. If you can, get in separate rows, ideally behind them. I prefer the aisle too.

7. Entertain yourself

I always prefer to read on the plane and with book and game apps on phone and tablets, it's easy to do so even while you seem to be working. I find travel distracting and disconcerting enough, trying to work on a plane is next to impossible for me. One thing to note: on the last flight I was on they made you turn off your phones completely, not just into airplane mode. I was very glad I had brought an actual book with me. My iPad battery was low and I wouldn't have had music or movies to play either.

8. A good soak

Not all hotels have fluffy robes or great ambiance but almost all of them have a tub. And a hot bath with a bath bomb is a great way to finally relax and unwind after a stressful trip. Pack one or grab one in the hotel gift shop if you have that option. It may even help you sleep when you are in the strange bed without your favorite spouse/pillows/pets.

Last but not least, no matter how annoying everyone is, remember to smile and say thank you. I get a way easier time when I give people a smile.

Taking a Concept Too Far

It's the end of January, so you know that means it's obviously time to look at lovely, airy, delicate Spring shoes. This year there are a few creations that have caught my eye but one in particular I want to discuss... the Prada Spring 2012 RTW 1950s car inspired sandals.

Now, we know Miuccia loves a good "themed" heel (and so do I says the girl with the Miu Miu red teacup heels as her icon), but while some of the shoes in the past - dragonflies, candlesticks, flowers - have worked well transformed into shoes, I just don't think these are working for me.

I do actually love the design of the heels. I love the sweet toe strap and embellishment, the colors shown and the flame strap. What takes it just that much too far is the addition of the Grease-esque tail lights on the heel. I think its that the whimsy of small inspirations or details of larger icons work but try to pull down something big, like a car, and it looks ridiculous.

So, while I won't be buying the Prada, the family will still get my money because I'm totally smitten with the looks from Miu Miu's Resort collection. Prada has the era's automotive icons but Miu Miu took the fashion... and turned it upside down. The hemlines are shorter but the patterns are there. The cardigans, pearls and frame bags echo the era in a fresh way.

But my eyes are all on the bow-bedecked gingham slingbacks. I'm loving them so much I'm trying for two colors. The fuchsia...

and the green...

The blue is lovely too and I saw an orange pair on the runway that I loved. Hmmm.. would 4 pairs be too many???

I have my eyes on a scenic landscape patterned dress I need to get to pair with these. Then I'll add a contrasting color cardigan and a wicker vintage purse. Time for these pre-orders to come in and Spring to hurry up!

Instant Access - 12/4 - 1/22

I can't believe that it has been more than a month since I've done an Instant Access recap. But given all the craziness of the last few weeks, I feel like (except for the last two weeks of the year), I've been running from one thing to another. From my grandmother passing away and having to travel for that, to ending at one job, starting another, traveling for work and then for fun, it's been a whirlwind!

My new job and been going well. Busy but good. I've used my little Lunch-Crock nearly every day. This is the best thing if you hate planning for lunch. I just plug it in and lunch is all warm and ready when I am.

I have an actual office with a door, so I'm very excited. Walls! I've brought in some pictures and met some people. I have a Twin Star at work who loves a lot of the same things and happens to have the funniest blog ever! You have to go read some of her hilarious day to day life (she actually talked about me on there too. Ha!)

I hope your weeks have been going well too! It's a new year and there's lots to do.

Big Banding and Swinging the Night Away

I just got back from yet another trip. This one was pure fun. My favorite hotel, the Grove Park Inn, was having it's Annual Big Band Weekend. We had never gone but we got a great rate and we love Asheville and it was a chance to dress up, so heck yeah.

Being January, it was great to snuggle in front of the Great Hall fireplace for a while.

This even was so much fun. It's a formal event and the Saturday night dance has the Glenn Miller orchestra playing. So amazing music in a beautiful setting. It is tied in with the USO which really added to the feeling of stepping back in time a bit.

And, there were some serious outfits and some seriously good dancers. Of course, the age range skewed mostly older but these people know what they are doing on a dance floor. (Fun Fact: I grew up traveling on cruise ships and have done a fair amount of dancing to Big Band over my life).

The fashion was formal but was interpreted all along the Big Band/Swing timeline. I saw some great 40s fashion, beautiful ball gowns and some slinky backless numbers. I went a bit more 1920s inspired in a beaded Vivinne Tam dress, while the husband wore his tux, red plaid bow tie and vintage owl cufflinks that I found for him.

I wore my Oh, Deer! Jamocha art deco-y t-straps along with black fishnets.

I definetly want to go back next year, but I think we need to take a few dance lessons first. I did not get to dance nearly as much as I would have liked to. I also think I want to go for more of a long swirly dress next time. They played a number of waltzes and I think the music and a long 30s "Thin Man" era dress would be great.

And while our trip was brief, we did manage to eat at two of our favorite places in Asheville. For lunch on Saturday we ate at Chai Pani, which is this casual India street food (or chaat) restaurant. It is a savory paradise. We got samosas, an uttapam with masala potatoes, okra fries and bhel puri (a snack mix with puffed rice, cilantro, onions, tamarind and more).

Then for dinner we went to Plant, our new favorite restaurant in the world. I'm totally serious. It's amazing and so good we were back there 15 hours later for brunch. Between the pumpkin seed crusted seitan, the amazing soup (always get the soup), the best cinnamon roll I've ever had and a cannoli, I'm stuffed.

Oh. In addition to getting a huge scramble and home fries (SL got the biscuits with homemade sausage and gravy) I got a big bowl of cheese grits. And did I mention that all of this is vegan. Yeah. It's amazing.

So now it's time to unpack and meals we have to make ourselves.

Betsey is the Best

I don't often have insomnia but last night I was wide awasy at 2am and could not fall back to sleep. Badthings happen when I'm feeling stressed and wide away with an iPhone and a ton of easily available shopping apps.

So really, I blame internet connectivity and pre-dawn craziness for this bout of shopping but hey, you always need cute tights, right?

Lately I've found some gorgeous Cynthia Rowley tights (mostly on Gilt) but I love the cheeky patterns of the Betsey Johnson pairs on HauteLook today. So much so that I got five pairs.

I have a pair similar to these but sweet hearts as dots? Yes please - Love At First Tights...

The creme and pink version of the Bowtime Backseam Tights are a bit understated but sexy, I think.

And these "mismatched" Naughty and Nice Textured Tights may be my absolute favorites. How fun are these???

Most of these tights come in several color options as well, but they won't last fast so, go and grab some!!!

Imitation = Flattery?

It's been a while since I've done an Inspiration = Flattery post. Sadly for me, I just haven't had the time to browse so I'm probably woefully out of touch with the latest designs, designer or mass.

But when I was excitedly checking out the new Rachel Antonoff x Bass collection, I stopped dead at the multi-color Maebird clear oxfords. And not just because of their colorful style.

Nope, it was because they totally looked like the Ground Zero x Alex & Rose clear brogues I almost bought last year.

The colors on the RAxB ones are a bit toned down and simplified but the inspiration is there, I think. I love the sweetly quirky pieces in the Bass/Antonoff collection but now they're a bit sullied for me.

What do you think?

Breaking Boundries

As you may knowfrom my Instagrams and Tweets, I've just started a new job. Among all the moving office stuff and learning who everyone is and what they do, I'm also contending with a big shift in workplace style.

It's funny how different each new company is. They each have a unique personality, character and (not withstanding a few outliers) style.

I've worked at many different extremes along the "professional dress" scale. At Disney, we had a full Look Book of rules and regulations that applied to office staff as well as those "On Stage". While our creative team had a dispensation and could dress however, the rest of the department was required to at least adhere to the spirit of the law, if not the letter. Some groups were really picky and some less so, but over all, it was pretty toned down and conservative. On a personal note, I didn't break any rules (I actually kept a copy with me all then time) but I did raise some eyebrows at times.

My now former company was towards the other end. We did dress up for presentations but on the day to day it was pretty casual. Let's say that flip-flops, shorts and tees were common year round. I can't say that I fell fully into this camp either. I tended to be a bit dressier but I also felt comfortable being a bit experimental too. One day would be a conservative look but another would be a sequin skeleton dress with laced-up boots, a vintage band jacket or a big pink gingham poofy skirt.

I can't peg myself as casual or conservative... I'm.... hmmm... whimsical, I guess would capture it best.

But my new place is leaning more towards the conservative side. We don't have to wear hose as a mandatory, like at Disney but I'm not sure how a crazy glitter sneakers are going to go down. So I'm starting out with some of my favorite interesting-yet-fun outfits. A grey belted shirt dress with bright green accents at the collar and cuffs, a lace print shift and a bow sweater top and great patterned tights.

I was really keen to see how others have showcased their style as well. One lady was wearing the most striking mangenta-y purple nail polish. Another has great style with perfect tailoring and some of the guys dress quite snazzy with a real eye for pattern, color and detail. The spirit seems to be all about playing with the parameters not worrying about any boundries.

So I'm doing the same. Great polish. Great accessories. Great shoes, of course.

Going forward I'll probably be weeding out some pieces that I liked and hung on to, despite the fact that I only wore them once or twice. I know I'll be making a few purchases that support those I already have. I've found a great red pencil skirt. I want cardigan in a good black and white pattern. And I really have been on the perfect pointed black pump to wear with skirts and jeans and at a height to wear all day. Jimm Choo has two options but I'm still considering options.

I have a new office to decorate and a new me to decorate too. I better start shopping my closet with a new eye!

Fancying Flowers

It's barely winter here. We're finally getting some really cold weather in North Carolina, but I already have a fancy for these flowery heels from Nine West.

I love that the fabric is so lush and fanciful but that they are paired with a stronger shape and platform. These would be fun with dark tights and a bright dress to make February less grey but then be even more perfect when it is finally Spring.

I went into the drugstore just the other day... the day BEFORE Christmas... and the shelves were already lined with Valentine's Day candy!!! What the heck, people?!?! I haven't even started eating the candy from my Christmas stocking yet!

But, while I think it is very wrong to have candy hearts out already, I was very excited and happy to get the surprise my Sweetie brough home to me - the Valentine's Day themed Sally Hansen Salon Effects!

He knows I love these and brought me 4 of the 5 designs (buy one, get one 50% off at CVS, by the way). These were the 4 I would have picked, so good job!

I love this pink/red/purple graphic design called "How Romantic".

The gradient, holographic pink hearts on white are adorable as well - "Speed Dating"

Pretty Much Sums It Up

I've been off of work this past week and on through the New Year. This is pretty much my goal for every one of those days. Movies, books, baking and napping are going to sum up my to do list.

A Visit to the Lowcountry

As I mentioned before, my grandmother (who was just about to turn 91) passed away last week. She lived in an area of South Carolina near Hilton Head. This is where my Dad's whole side of the family lives and where we went often for family trips when I was growing up.

Known as the Lowcountry, coastal South Carolina is so different from where I grew up in Miami and even other parts of the state. And even though just a few hundred miles away from where we are in NC, it has a totally different personality.

The city she lived in used to be so small and sleepy but, due to it's beauty and history, has really grown over the last 20 years. Tons of films have been shot here and the population has shot up, as has the number of businesses and traffic.

My Dad, though, lives on one of the many islands that makes up the area and when you are there, right on the water, it's very peaceful. We spent much of our quick visit hanging around the house, playing with the cats and enjoying the view. Here's a few quick pics -

We got up on Sunday to enjoy the crisp air and the sunrise off of the dock.

I think we are going to head back in a few months. I want to do yoga on the dock at sunrise and maybe jump in a kayak to have a closer chat with the dolphins!

Le Sigh - Miu Miu Catwalk Noir Sunglasses in Red Glitter

Sometimes I'm a little slow on listening to my wishes. I mean, I've been sighing over the Miu Miu Catwalk Noir sunglasses for a while, but as I have a perfectly good black pair of Miu Miu sunglasses and the Prada Baroque sunglasses in white, I had no good reason to get them.

But red glitter????? A must have!

So now, I'm hoping and wishing... will my Christmas dreams come true???

Grammy

My Grammy passed away yesterday. This was one of my favorite photos of us - my wedding day.

Some of my favorite memories of her:

- She was wonderful with plants and grew the most beautiful tiger lilies and African violets.

- She had a great love of animals and always had pets she cared for... except for the pesky squirrels who would eat her lilies!

- She was an amazing baker and cook. She always made my favorite Sour Cream pound cake when I came to visit and I still have the recipe written down in her own hand. I've made it many times myself to much raving.

- Grits - Southern Grammies make them the best.

- Sweet Tea - you need at least a few cups of sugar per pitcher!

- She one time scared the heck out of me with this monster mask we had. Her sense of humor was amazing

- She had an enviable collection of salt and pepper shakers

She was the sweetest lady I've ever known.

Falling for Fair Isle

The other day I mentioned I had been searching for the perfect Fair Isle items to add to my holiday wardrobe. Well, I've actually been thinking about this since October when I saw the Sally Hansen Nail Effects patterns for the 2011 Holiday collection.

I may have found my perfect items in this tunic and sweater coat from Macy's.

I love Fair Isle in red and white, so that was my first criteria. When paired with black (and on major sale), this sweater tunic will be great with leggings and boots.

And I'm going to wear it with the Plaid About You decals, plus some saucy red gloves.

And while I wasn't looking for a new cozy cardigan, this Tommy Hilfiger piece was so perfect in pattern and shape, that I couldn't resist. I mean, what is more holiday-ish than these snowflakes?

And yes, the matchy-matcherson in me is probably going to wear the Snow Bunny decals with it. Or maybe Peppermint Twist (the candy cane stripe design).

While I have a soft spot for these patterns and pieces on their own, even better is that they combine my two themes for the season. They fit into the "Clean College Prep" style while using the "Chromatic French" color scheme.

Perfect!

Change is Difficult

I don't talk about my work too much here on the blog but things have been a-changin'.

I have been with the same company for the last five and a half years, and happily so, but an opportunity presented itself and it seemed like a good one.

So I'm transitioning to a new company right after the new year.

I've been a bit absent the last few days and weeks because my head was all wrapped up in the process. I'm not afraid of change but, even if it's all good, I get anxious and worked up.

So, I have let my current company know about this impending change and now I'm in that weird space between old and new. Not sure about what's to come while still working on stuff that will be out of my hands soon.

So the year will be ending along with a chapter of my professional life. I am looking forward to the new while appreciating the past. So, I'm sorry about the weird absences but I hope more good things to be coming down the road!

I swear once the year hits September, the days and weeks just fly by until the end of the year. There is so much going on it feels like we need 3 extra weekends a month just to fit it in.

And the weather has been crazy here too. From days in the 70s around Thanksgiving to rain to cold-cold-cold! What's going on.

Just from looking at all the recent shoes that happened these past weeks, you can see how all over the place the temperatures have been.

I've been dreaming about finding the perfect Fair Isle pattern this winter. But I never thought I would find it on a pair of Keds!

I am totally loving these new Fair Isle sneakers and slippers from my favorite Keds. I already needed a new pair of slippers.... how cute would these be?

The sneakers are cute as well (and come in 3 color options). I would probably add laces though. I'm not a fan of the slip-on version.

Who knew sneakers could look so cozy!

What Would You Pair?

I need some help!!!

Last year for my company Christmas party, I asked for your thoughts on two outfit options. I ended up going with the poofy party dress and Manolos and had a splendid time. Since you gave such good advice that time, what do you think I should do this year???
I am wearing a sequin sheath dress from JCrew topped with a tuxedo jacket.

The sequins are patterned in green, cold and silver and there is a raw edged liner as you can see here.

I'm totally considering pairing this with my vintage top hat and the Kate Spade Night Owl bag.

So here are four narrowed down shoe options I'm considering:

1. Alexander Wang Anais silver tassle pumps

2. Christian Louboutin Yo Yo Zeppa suede peep-toes

So, a quick outfit post. Our weather has been so wacky (warm and sunny, warm enough to wear shorts!) and then I've been at home cleaning and baking and prepping for Thanksgiving. After that I just sat around and read The Hunger Games trilogy for two days.

But I did actually wear a decent outfit in there. My quick combo is a teal velvet jacket from Erin Featherstone for Target, a draped and stripe-y skirt from Anthropologie, red tights and Sam Edelman Rita boots

I'm hoping it will cool off again so we have an actual few days of Fall weather before it's boots and ice driving.

Store Focus - Beyond Skin Shoes

It's been a while since I featured Beyond Skin here on Shoe Daydreams, but I really need to source them more often. They consistently have cute shoes that, while not cheap, are not as pricey as Stella McCartney. They definitely are doing their part to showcase how stylish cruelty-free shoes can be.

Of course, everyone needs a few good glitter heels. I like the Sirene and Sweetie.

The Penny oxford herringbone booties are perfect for this season - from wide trousers to skinny jeans or tights and a pleated skirt.

The edgier Conni lace-up boot is pretty snazzy too.

The tan and black patent Colleen bootie has classic Chanel-esque colorway that keeps up with modern styling.

But personally I'm a sucker for a shiny metallic pump, like the faux snakeskin version of the Sirene.

But I have to admit they gold diamond pattern is striking too. This also comes in a great aqua zigzag print that would look stunning with a chocolate sweater dress and tights.

And their Heart ballet flats come in every variation you could possibly need. I'm partial to the multi-color glitter myself.

I actually really want the Franklin faux croc pumps. Their shape is perfect 1940s. Picture mid-length pencil skirts, The Big Sleep and Bogey heroines. I have a vintage pair like this but I know they won't last forever. These would be great with so many outfits.

And they have great basics too, like black patent wingtips...

... or velvet beribboned loafer slippers, Beyond Skin has that too.

Most of their styles come in several color and pattern options, their prices range around $100 and up but their having a sale now. And they're vegan! I love how they say: "No humans, animals or small children were harmed in the making of our shoes. " Wouldn't it be great if everything was that way?

I get tons of hits and questions regarding finding the Joules Posh Bow Wellies shown above and shared here last year. I don't blame you! They are adorable and I love wearing the pairs that I got.

Sadly this exact style was for last year, but you are in luck! I do have some options and ideas to share with you if you are dying for a pair with the saucy bows.

First up is a beribboned style from Joules called the Evedon. This comes in the red with navy you see below, a purple with purple and a navy with gold. They're $105, which is pricey I know but I know you ladies want them!. Joules also does tons of other cute wellies, so check out their selection.

Would you... - YSL Rubber Tribute Pump

I have a few pairs of the Melissa shoes, know for their bubblegum smell, fun designs and, of course, rubber materials.

But would you expect to see jelly rubber and YSL together? Neither did I.

Modeled after their classic sandal heels, these are super high and on a platform, which combined with what their made of, makes me a bit scared!

Would you wear a pair of heels in rubber and such precarious ones too?

Even when it's barely the end of Fall, it doesn't seem too early to be thinking about peep-toe heels, especially when they are as sweet, pink and pretty as Manolo Blahnik's Sammy d'Orsays.

The peep-toe d'Orsay style from Mnsr. Blahnik is one of my favorite shapes. I think a pink bouclé tweed version is definitely a must have!

Liking Loafers

A few years ago I rarely looked at flats with any excitement. They all seemed plain, boring and utilitarian. But now, flats are fun again! And with that, I'm seeing more and more that I really like.

I've always like ballet flat, oxfords and penny and tassel loafers but these revamped classic slipper loafers are so playful and fun. It started with the leopard loafer debate (I ended up getting the Aldo pair, marked down and with a promo code... woot!), but I think I need more!

My favorite pair are these Stubbs & Wootton Delphin pair. I collect vintage Victorian silver serving pieces adorned with these dolphins, so I'm totally smitten. And S&W are known for their tongue-in-cheek preppy designs. These are $400 but their from the iconic maker, so that's expected.

For a more feminine take on the slipper, I love the lace pair from ASOS. These are called "Lord of the Manor" and are just under $63.

These dalmatian patterned pair from Aldo are one of the most striking designs. They're available on ASOS for $125 and on the Aldo site for $90.

If you want something Stubbs & Wootton-esque but not quite as pricey, these Leo velvet jeweled slippers are just $89 on ASOS.

Another dalmatian dotty pair, this time from Topshop. These are just $60 and perfect for inside and out.

And for a more subtle option (just kidding!), these grey glittery pair, also from Topshop, are perfect for jazzing up a simple outfit. They're only $40 and come in black as well.

Both ASOS and TopShop have tons of options, from jeweled velvet to glitters and leopard print. These are the perfect cozy shoe so it's easy to get swept up in getting a glamorous collection.

It's finally Fall!!!

We drove over to Asheville for the day to do an errand and saw some great leaf action. There were rumors of snow flurries so I pulled out my coat and blue/brown faux hat, but it was so pretty I didn't even need it.

The animals are loving the weather too. Kitties in the windows, Jake and Meg scratching around and the goats are all frisky!

Special breakfast for one...

More flats if you can believe it. These sequined skimmers from Alloy were so pretty I got all three colors. They were only $30 each AND I had a $20 off the total order coupon code. Score!

The A. Wang Anais silver loafer heels. Murderously high but so gorgeous!

The Betsey Johnson satin-lined boots were a bit easier on the ankles.

And of course fun manicures for Halloween - spider web nails...

And glow-in-the-dark zombie nails.

The weeks ended on a scarier note than Halloween... trying to sync and update my iPhone and iPad. Why is it such a pain?!?!?

With some latest promos, I've invested in the following items.

1. Red Skirt

I haven't found a great pair of red jeans for me yet but a skirt I can easily wear. This classic pencil skirt is from Express. It's lined and you can nab a deal with their promo code or by signing up for their email. Before coupons it is $79.

2. Sparkly Skirt

This skirt, also from Express, jumped out at me on Pinterest. Also $79 before the coupon code, I loved the playful tiers of sequins... and you know I'm a sucker for sequins. I'm going to dress it down with a slouchy sweater and tights.

3. Swirly Skirt

I fell in love with the City Lights Lilith skirt from Kate Spade (you can see it being designed here). It was a bit pricey but then they had their big 75% off sale and I grabbed it. I don't think it's available now but there are two other patterns in this style that are still on sale. Both are awfully cute as well!

Looking for Leopard

Flats are slowly taking over my life and my wardrobe. Not sure what's happening here, but the cute stuff is happening in loafers and oxfords, sneakers and slippers.

I am currently trying to decide how to incorporate some sweet leopard flats (I only have a pair of leopard kitten heels) to carry me through Fall and Winter.

I've narrowed it down to 2 options, the first is this Aldo Buschur pair for $125 via ASOS.

The second pair is from River Island and are a bit more detailed and a less expensive at $53.91. Also from ASOS.

Caught My Eye - Oscar de la Renta Lapis Clutch

I don't tend to gush over runway shows but I am such a fan of color that I couldn't help but love on the Oscar de la Renta S/S 2012 RTW presentation. I was especially fond of these yellow/black and green/black dresses.

But what really caught my eye was this... a lapis stone clutch with a tiger's eye clasp.

It's something that I would never have a "need" for but it's so beautiful that it's something that I really really want.

I am sighing about it until next year to see if I need to only dream about it...

Seasonally Spectacular - Sally Hansen Salon Effects Holiday 2011

As much as I was excited for the Halloween Sally Hansen Salon Effects, I'm even MORE SO about the Holiday 2011 designs.

I went into Target over the weekend and, as I turned the corner, I found they had them out and I knew instantly that I would have to get them. There is no waiting on these limited edition designs. If you see them, get them for yourself!

I got four out of the five designs.

The reds - Plaid About You, Peppermint Twist and Snow Bunny - go with everything I'm wearing, from pleated skirts and velvet blazers to Fair Isle Sweaters and tights.

I loved the black and metallic silver Prep's Cool but held off on the Winter Fun-derland as I have so many glitter polishes I should use.

These colors and designs are perfect with my Fall-Winter 2011 Themes but would go great for anyone. Who isn't wearing a bit of red or some snuggly tights during the season?

It's been a busy few weeks around here. Furniture Market for my clients, a trip to New York to work with some blogger friends, a brief bout with a cold, opening our pub, backyard movie nights and spending time getting ready for the cooler seasons while finding them already upon us.

SD Project: Bijou Dressing Table

I am SO EXCITED to share my latest project with you. It's been in the works for ages and it's finally, finally done!

As you may have seen from previous "home tour" posts, I have an old home that is fairly streamlined and not very girly. I love our decor but I've always wanted a pretty dressing room. I've been sort of adding elements, such as my shoe cabinets, to our guest room but I am loathe to take over the whole space completely. I also, didn't really have a place that would be safe for a delicate dressing table or all the perfumes, puffs and crystal that I would want to be there.

But that doesn't mean that I haven't dreamed of a pretty space all my own...

Then I realized I did have one small space that I could repurpose into a bijou dressing table. I started making plans and lists...

In my funky old home I have a funny closet-in-a-closet space in the guest room.

You open the outer door and you see this rectangular space that has a clothes rod on the left, a window on the right and another deep cabinet straight ahead.

The inner cabinet holds the guest room blankets and pillows, hat boxes and craft supplies. I keep some shoes in here as well as my off season clothes.

I drew up plans for a shelf that would be hinged under the window which would be supported by a shelf bracket for a brace and two decorative chains on each side. The bracket would be hinged to lie flat against the wall and then the table part, also hinged would be able to be lowered down so I could open the inner cabinet doors.

Once I decided on a plan, I started to plan my furnishings - vintage dressing table linens...

A Ghost chair to sit on... I thought and searched for ages on what chair to have in the space. It need to be high enough but small in width. I looked at all kinds of chairs and stools from new Pottery Barn to vintage vanity stools. In the end, I've always loved the Ghost chairs and the clear will keep the small space airy.

With a color scheme of crystal, pinks soft and bright, gold and small touches of black, a sari was the perfect fabric to act as a cover for the clothing section and a window shade.

The project has been on hold for a while but know that I'm back in town, the pub is done and I'm done being sick this week, it has all come together.

The outer door now has a small sign warning of the girly space inside.

Yes, I have a Keep Calm poster, but now it's hidden inside the "fourth wall" of the room. The sari was long enough to cover the clothes still on the left, drape across the ceiling and down, suspended from chain, to cover and decorate the window.

Isn't it ADORABLE????

I've decorated it with some of my existing pieces as well. A Waterford crystal sugar sifter for powder, a Caron puff, my Chanel and Chloe perfumes and Waterford clock (the first piece I ever bought from when I was 17) on a Waterford tray. A glove hand and small boxes for jewelry.

The most crucial piece I invested in and that I was very specific about was the mirror. I knew from the start that I wanted a vintage Murano dressing mirror and this one with it's gilding and pale pink glass flowers was everything I dreamed of.

The Ghost chair and my tuffet fit perfectly too. I'm going to get a faux flokati to cushion and protect the chair. That's the last detail.

The last details are these amazing antique hand-cut paper cuts I had framed. With their fairy tale themes they are perfect for my new space.

And my gilded shelf holds a delicate glass carousel horse.

I so thrilled to have my little space. I can't wait to linger over perfumes and polish and powder.

We all need a special place to find a bit of peace... mine just happens to be pink!

I've had my eyes out for these for several months, and now the Miu Miu glitter sneakers are mine mine mine!

I actually went and got them when I was in New York last week. I mainly worked but I allotted myself an hour to go to the store before my plane and make sure to get them. As sparkly as they look in the picture, they are a thousand times more sparkly and crazy in person. I may need to take a video to really show how crazy they are.

Of course, I love the crazy!

And if you don't have the opportunity to grab a pair, make a pair! I was about to do this if I couldn't get them. Honestly... WTF has the best DIYs around.

I'm off for a quick trip to NYC!

I'm trying to pack light, just my purse and my vintage American Tourister Tiara suitcase.

I should clarify that this still isn't light. My purse is filled with stuff and my little case isn't that little, especially when I'll need to carry it rather than roll it. While I have a bunch of luggage, I don't have the perfect small carry on. Either it's too big, and I don't want to check this trip, or it's too small or it's too nice!

Darn overhead restrictions!

It's been a crazy week with work and I'm not looking forward to all the rain this trip. I've finished packing and charging all my electronics up, now all I need to do is my nails and get some sleep!

SD Review - Revlon Expressionists Collection Nail Polishes

I am a BIG fan of glitter and have to admit, I'm a sucker for glitter nail polishes. So, when I was in ULTA the other day and saw the display for the new Revlon Expressionists collection, I had to grab a few of the polishes.

And they are stunning. There are 4 colors in the nail collection: Smoky Canvas, Facets of Fuchsia, Blue Mosaic and Starry Pink. I got all but Smoky Canvas.

The colors are stunning. Jelly base polishes with small round and large hex glitters. I can't wait to try these two.

What I'm wearing right now is Facets of Fuchsia - a sheer black base with purple glitter. This color is elegant, subtle and stunning.

Deborah Lippmann has made glitter polish upscale and classy, but Revlon (especially with this near dupe of DL's Bad Romance) is hot on her heels. I was is love with this polish from the first brush stroke.

If you can find these polishes, get them. The price is great and the colors will totally impress you.

I also bought one of the eyeshadows. I'm less thrilled with this, as I find glittery shadows to be too "chunky" but the colors are cute too.

Investing in Gold

Pinterest is getting to be deadly. I keep seeing images like these and deciding that I must go out and grab these items myself. I need gold for Fall.

I've been off gold for a while but this season, it just seems right. As real gold shoots up, I find myself wanting to add it back in. But not real gold... I want burnished vintage warm old gold.

I want to wear gold with red, with black, with navy and brown and especially leopard print and tortoiseshell.

So my first and best bargain was this leopard print clutch from ASOS. With a coupon code, I nabbed it for about $25 (it's only $35 now) and have received tons of compliments on it. I've been searching for a clutch that grabbed my attention, was the right size and price and this is it. I've been wearing it to work the past few days and it's funny how a clutch makes you feel instantly more put together.

This even has great metal accents and, on the upside, I don't have to worry about it getting ruined!

I have to admit, I've been wanting this watch for over 4 years. I finally found a good price on Amazon ($50 off!) and caved. I love a chunky watch and Michael Kors created the perfect one. It's acrylic tortoiseshell and just dreamy.

But then Pinterest and my sucker-ness for sequins got me again...

Zara got me with this sequin "wallet" clutch. (They also got me to get this polka-dot jacket but sadly it didn't fit right and had to go back. Sad face.)

So yes, me and chunk watch-clutch-magic-time is going to be happening all winter long.

To add to my clutch-bracelet soiree, I found some great pieces at my favorite antiques fair.

Not the hex nut bracelet, of course. I made that during my big craft weekend. It's amazing how photogenic these are.

Nope, my two vintage pieces were these great mesh bracelets. They are so comfy to wear.

The teal accent is going to go perfectly with my new mary janes.

Little mesh bracelet... just as sweet.

And my favorite finds were these Volupte cigarette case and compact with a gorgeous Persian enameled motif.

The case is tiny but I'm going to use it as a clutch. Just pop my cards and id and that's it for a night out. No keys carrying that night. Or I can pop it into one my my new clutches instead of my overstuffed wallet.

I usually default to silver, but this season, it's all about gold.

Perception vs Reality

A few weeks ago I was sighing over these Manolo Blahnik "Erratic" mary janes. The color. The scalloping. The mary jane-ness. And of course the spiky heel.

I loved the stacked wood skinny heel. Heel shape is kind of my "thing".

So I was kind of surprised when, after tracking them down with the help of my friends at Bergdorf Goodman, that they came with a covered, thicker heel... um, what?!?

I looked back at the product description and it said that it was a stacked heel too. Strange.

So I considered not keeping them, but they are still pretty stunning shoes...

What do you think when a product doesn't arrive exactly as described. Do you get annoyed and return it or judge it on it's own merits and evaluate with fresh eyes?

Ensemble du Jour - Oktoberfest Edition

PROST!

Tonight was the official grand opening of the pub we built. This little pub is built in the old nanny's quarters off of the back of our garage building. My husband and our talented neighbors turned this shell of a room into a pretty sweet pub filled with copper bar top, hand-crafted wrought iron footrest, hex and subway tiling, a vintage wood stove, darts... and a stolen Bavarian flag!

My contribution was the name, (temporary) logo, homemade pretzels and being the bar girl wearing a dirndl straight from Germany for our Oktoberfest.

As I mentioned the other day, I did more crafts on my Crafty Crafterson day. Two other crafts were the necklace to wear with my dirndl...

And my matching purse. The traditional Trachten outfit often adds a gingerbread inspired purse to wear with the outfit. To save some money, since the outfit was a bit pricey, was to make my own!

I hand stitched the purse using 3 pieces of brown felt and then added embellishments to give it that "iced" look.

I think it turned out pretty snazzy! Since it took me several hours, I'm glad it did. We're actually going to another Oktoberfest next weekend, so I'll get my use of it then. I just hope my stitches hold!

Now, off to play another round of darts...

I'm not a huge purse gal but I am a sucker for whimsy and when I spied the Kate Spade Night Owl I was instantly smitten.

Yes, it's a bit silly. Yes, I have no practical need for it. Yes, it's a splurge.

But just look at it! I'm totally anthropomorphizing it. Love the googly eyes, the plump "body", the glossy mesh.

Must. Have. Owly.

Such a sweet polka dot interior too.

And look! I can wear it fancy or with casual outfits too. It's versatile, I tell ya!

I would not call myself a "crafting" type of person. I like to make stuff for myself sometimes but not all the time. Generally, I just don't have the time, the space or the patience. But every once in a while I get in the mood and spend the whole day churning out a bunch of project.

And I have to admit this is a Pinterest-fueled post. I saw a bunch of cute ideas on there, ran to Michael's and bought a whole ton of stuff to make.

I started off easy with a fun centerpiece. I love that I can switch out the contents each month - chestnuts in November, cranberries in December, etc.

That took just a few minutes, but then it got out of hand as I dug though all my supplies and pulled stuff out. I have now determined I have waaaayyy too much stuff. Dang!

Shakers for my glitter = more glitter manicures to follow

Storage for my nail plates - a simple project.

I've had this piece of black coral since I was a kid. It became a necklace for my neighbor.

And this necklace went to the little girl across the street.

1 embroidery hoop and 40 yards of black tulle later and I have my new favorite wreath for Halloween.

The Fall wreath was simple - a wreath hoop and two strings of the faux fall leaves. Wired on and I added a ribbon too. Done!

A gaggle of ghostie pins for me and my friends...

I actually did 3 other projects too (11 in all!) if you can believe it but those are going to have to come in a separate post. I was exhausted by Sunday night!

These past few weeks have been challenging. But we are all together. We drove to Illinois again, this time for the memorial for my Father-in-Law. It was a beautiful event. Hudreds of people attended and it took almost 3 hours for everyone to come through. It was a great testimony to how beloved he was. These flowesrs were the centerpiece of the event and were so joyful and stunning and perfect.

We went through woods, over rivers and under mountains....

The dogs are great car companions...

My nails have been trashed lately, but I'm keeping them somewhat polished. This is Deborah Lippmann's Naked with Essie's Midnight Cami and China Glaze's Midnight Kiss dots using my new dotting tool (which I LOVE).

I have a problem. More new polish...

And my new bracelet from Rahya Designs via Miss Malprop was a sunny spot to my day.

Featured Shoe: Manolo Blahnik Nesti Slingbacks

I admit it, there are a lot of shoes that were on Sex and the City that I loved. Sure, it's a bit cliche but for someone outside of the City, it introduced me to designers I had not know before.

One of my favorite style moments from the series came in Season 4, Episode 65 - "A Vogue Idea".

The episode was famous for the Vogue closet and the urban shoe myth, the Manolo Blahnik "Campari" black patent mary janes.

Yep, I had to have them and I love them, but there was another pair I had to track down as well.

I totally pined for this Vivienne Westwood suit that Carrie wore to her meeting at Vogue as well as the perfect taupe patent slingbacks she paired with it. Check them out in action here.

I tried many other shoe hopefuls but I never found a good candidate. Then one day I saw the following on the Saks website. The are the Manolo Blahnik "Nesti" slingbacks. Not quite the same shape and a bit pointier but perfect color, slingback and heel. I was so excited!

But then I found out they were exclusive to Saks and they had not purchased my size... Oh Noes!!!

I called the buyer, the Manolo Blahnik rep, was going to special order a pair through the store... a real Shoe Search. The Saks folks were great and helpful and even offered me a deal on another pair of Blahniks. As I was mulling this over several weeks, my luck changed. They did end up getting my size and the coveted shoes were mine!

These are the perfect neutral classy shoe. I don't often suggest getting a "classic" heel when you are investing in a designer shoe but the exact shoe I wanted seemed so elusive that I had to grab it. I'm so happy I did.

Seasons and Silence

Last week I did a lot of driving... 32 hours to be exact. I drive about 30 minutes to work each way and have found that time to be one of the few moment's of peace I get all day.

I work in an open plan office in an industry where I'm interacting with creatives and clients and vendors all day long. The computer is on, the phone is ringing, there is music playing and other people having meetings and phone conversations.

At home, I walk into the house with animals barking and running, the TV is often on and I need to share time with my husband.

While most of these are good, or at least interesting, things, for a "Highly Sensitive" person they can be overwhelming and exhausting. I tolerate the stimulus as much as I can, but eventually I need to recharge and, frankly, hide out!

As a child, I had a walk in closet. My bookshelf was in there and I would sit in there with my back to the door and relax and read. Even now you will sometimes find me in my closet sitting on the floor and just organizing stuff. And if I'm away from home, after a time I will need to go away from people and sit in a quiet room. There is only so much I can take.

Moments of peace are hard to find in the over-sharing, over-stimulated, over-bright world.

On my drive home, I will frequently leave the radio off. The wind and tires are enough background noise, akin to white noise, and they help me to transition from work and prepare for home.

Lately I have been using the TED app on my iPhone to listen to TED talks. There are so many great ones to choose from with topics ranging from activism to inspiration. I just love them!

Music, can muffle and soothe (my favorite is classical or African singers such as Habib Koite) but my favorite thing to listen to is....

The tumble dryer! It could be the association with warm, clean towels or afternoons at home, but I love it. I listen to that or the "cat purring" environment on iSerenity.com all the time!

The darker days of Fall and Winter, with early dusk, rain and cool weather, are my time to recharge. What do you do to relax, pamper and protect yourself?

Spooktacular Nails

I love Fall. And now that I'm having a total love affair with nails and manicures and polish, I can't wait to try all my darker colors and fun effects.

But October is going to be even more spooktacular because the polish folks really get into the season!

I've already shared that I nabbed the OPI Pair'em Scare'em polishes - glow-in-the-dark "Zom-Body-To-Love" with the black shatter.

But today when I was in CVS, I found that Sally Hansen's Salon Effects are out in awesomely cute Halloween designs. I. LOVE. Them.

We had a great service for my Father-in-Law with hours of people coming to visit and share the memorial with our family. These flowers were from an amazing arrangement that was a part of the room.

Shattered - Kate Spade iPhone Hard Case Sadness

So I'm sad and kind of annoyed.

For ages I wanted this Kate Spade iPhone case - the black with white dots, specifically.

My sweetie got it for me for my birthday and I was very excited. I loved the colors and the graphic design. I overlooked that, because it is hard plastic all around, it was a bit slippery and prone to fingerprints. But there have been two major issues that put me off these hard cases in general and, sadly, the Kate Spade ones in particular.

First - I wanted to be able to change the slick, pretty case out for a more grippy case when I went to a street fair, but once it was snapped together it was impossible to remove. I tried to pry it apart but nearly damaged it, so I then felt I was trapped and had to live with it.

Not a good thing. I don't want to break a brand new $40 case. It could be easy to remove.

The second issue is a HUGE issue - I was able to get it off eventually. Namely when I dropped my phone. Not a hard drop and not onto a very hard surface. The phone was fine but the case shattered into 3 pieces and expelled my phone. No protection there! Oh yeah, and now I'm out of the case... for good.

This is really bad. I've barely had the phone for a month and it is broken. Bummer.

I did get a second Kate Spade iPhone case, but changed to the silicone case below. It's easier to grip, easy to remove and hopefully more protective too.

I hate to criticize Kate Spade and the super cute case but this is an expensive item. And it's designed to protect another expensive item. I'm also not the first to have this problem. We did a quick search and found loads of similar complaints.

Sure, I love how cute is but not at the expense of breaking my phone. Sadly, I won't be buying another Kate iPhone hard case again, no matter how temptingly cute they are.

I'm investing in my nails big time. Or as big time as nail stuff can be. Sure it adds up but the low buy-in of polish has me hooked. Even the Konad stamping sets aren't that much. I got a bunch of the special polishes and plates. Now I just need to get some skill!

This book is amazing. I can't believe I haven't read it sooner.

I love Chanel No 19 perfume. The new Poudre version is lovely as well.

Colors! I love a good Sharpie, but...

I use fountain pens more. This is my Verona pen that I fill with pink ink.

My neighbors held a bomb-diggity dance party too, so we danced the night away under the full moon and the stars.

My dog was not so energetic.

On a very sad note, my wonderful Father-in-Law passed away on Friday. We miss him terribly. We've found all the great shots of him and I just love this one. So snazzy.

They're the perfect mix of magpie-shiny and preppy-tasseled-cool. And, damn if I don't love a silver shoe.

As Ariel says, I don't know when, I don't know how but I'm going to get my hands on these heels.

Zara Is Winning My Heart

I've been smitten with Zara for a while. Sadly, each time I go to New York, I run out of time to really shop there in person. And, because I live in Fashion Exile (aka North Carolina), we don't have a Zara here.

When I 've seen adorable items like this pink boyfriend blazer, I have had to track it down on Ebay (and hell, yes, I tracked this baby down).

But now we who are in the boonies (apparently), need suffer no more. Zara is online!!!

YEAH!

And yes, I had to jump on and grab some items. I dithered too long and two dresses I liked ran out but that just helped me narrow my cart down a bit.

First I bought a "basic" that I had on the Needed list for Fall/Winter... a cable knit sweater dress in black. Simple but perfect for jazzing up a number of ways.

Then this whimsical tee caught my eye. I'm so wearing this under a brown corduroy blazer and jeans.

And my last item of the day was this snazzy red polka-dot blazer. It's going to transition through Fall, be perfect with my "Chromatic French" theme and will probably still be kicking around in summer too (maybe I'll need an Americana theme for 2012)

Since items run out fast (especially on day one), I think this is going to be a daily stop for me.

Fall-Winter 2011 - Daydream Themes

I'm not sure if anyone else does, but I tend to think of my seasonal wardrobe in themes. I don't always stick to it very strongly but it does give me outfit ideas and inspiration for the next six months.

Past themes have been "Modern Princess, Lawn Party and Sparkling1950s" for this past spring/summer. Purchases that season included a vintage Swirl dress from Shrimpton Couture, a sequin cocktail dress from JCrew and a rose-bedecked dress from Talbots. Last winter was "Dark Woods, Fairy Tales and Uniforms". I added a faux fur capelet, the Where the Wild Things Are/Opening Ceremony faux fur skirt and a pencil skirt with a pheasant applique from Anthropologie.

This year I'm considering "Clean College Prep and Chromatic French". "College Prep" getting me excited for knee-high boots, cozy sweaters, tonal layering and plaid while "Chromatic French" will be whimsical, classic and built around red, black and creme.

I'm pulling back on spending lately, so I'll be doing a lot of creative closet shopping. I have a full plan to do a closet clean out and hopefully switch to the "Five Piece French Wardrobe" shopping method. I need to flush this out first and then I'll post on it, but I'm going to be good about buying only long term items. For someone who gets bored of their clothes, this will be a challenge.

But maybe I get bored with my clothes because they are generic. Hmmm...

Anyway, I've got my eye on some glittery sneakers, a super bright tote, a clear clutch, a new blazer and maybe some velvet. We'll have to see what materializes and how the fashion kismet will work with me.

We still have a few weeks left of warm weather, especially here in NC, but I'm excited for Fall!

Hello from Shoe World!

I'm sorry it's been sort of quiet around here. We've been dealing with car repairs, work, 12-hour-each-way car trips, earthquakes and hurricanes! How are things in your world?

But there are still shoes, right?

I needed to get in these two beauties before winter takes away all my wearing opportunities - Christian Louboutin Very Prive in cork and neon green suede Manolo Blahnik BBs.

Within all the crazy times we did find time to go to this great architectural salvage place. I'm in love with these pastel sinks.

We ended up with these light covers. They are going to be painted and go in our upstairs bedrooms. Finished pictures someday soon, I hope!

We made the drive to Chicago to visit family. Car trip means I can use some of my favorite luggage like my vintage American Tourister Tiara case... holding shoes, of course!

The pups came with us. They are great car companions, even on a 12 hour trip.
