Pretty and Good and Things

I always love a new sweet hair accessory. Especially the ones I get from Mary at Pretty Good Things. She has such a talent for creating cute and quirky fascinators and bands and pins that I simply must have!

Plus she's super fun and cute herself...

This time around (I think I now have 8 of her pieces!)  I had to have this whimsical donut...

and this headband made with vintage deer figurines. It can be dressed for the holidays, as shown, or just a cute string of little deer.

As soon as Spring really makes an appearance, I will pair these with woodland print dresses and all the pastels in my closet!

Must Have: Kitty Ears

A new "Must Have" for me...

Japanese research project team Nerowear's "Necomimi" flops down as a visitor relaxes when she smells lavender oil at its promotional event in Tokyo. The strap-on cat ears have abilities to wiggle, twitch, perk up or flop down by responding to user's brainwaves.

Of course this is from Japan, gotta love them:

TOKYO - In Japan, they're all ears for the latest in hi-tech fashion. The stylish headgear, a set of white ears that move according to the wearer's thoughts and emotions, is called "Necomimi" — "cat's ears" in Japanese.

With two brain-wave sensors, Necomimi can detect and interpret the emotional state of the wearer, expressing it through four distinct movements.

The ears shoot up with the wearer is nervous or focused, but flatten when the person is relaxed.

During a specific activity like a game or reading a book, in which the user may be relaxed and focused at the same time, the ears swirl around in a circular motion. When brain activity is low, they flap gently back and forth.

The science of neuro-control is being developed in labs all over the world as a way to help the disabled or victims of 'locked-in' syndrome, where a patient is awake but unable to move or communicate, but Necomimi's creators at a firm called Neuroscience wanted something for all to enjoy.

The cat theme required some tinkering, though.

"For example, when cats are frightened or want to scare away an enemy, they flatten their ears. But with Necomimi, flat ears mean a relaxed state of mind," said Kana Nakano at Neurowave, one of Necomimi's creators.

"We have changed the meaning to suit human perceptions. To humans, it's kind of cute when cat ears are flat. So the most difficult bit was to fine tune cat ear movements."

In Switzerland, scientists are adapting neurowave technology for wheelchair users, while in Germany, it's being tested as a means for operating a car.

While the cat ears may seem like a trivial approach, the developers say the technology could be adapted as a communication tool for those who may be reclusive or shy around strangers.

For now, however, Necomimi is aimed at the curious and the fashion-conscious.

"I find it amusing that cat ears were moving in conjunction with my feelings," said Misa Tokuizumi, a dentist.

Neurowave says it plans to launch the Necomimi internationally later this year at a price of several hundred dollars per unit.

Finally!

So I finally did it.

I've been talking and thinking about coloring my hair super dark - as close to black as possible - for ages.  I've loved my red hair but all of a sudden I felt ready to take the plunge.  I have a great colorist and if I really want to find a way back to the red I think I can.  But lately I've just felt it was too much.  I like to wear color so I was wondering if it was just to great of a contrast.

I had my appointment today and I said "Yes!  Let's change it!"and we picked out a good dark dark brown with no red, caramel, or blond undertones - just a straight espresso - and went with it. It's actually even darker than I expected but I already love it.

So here's a few quick phone shots.  The color in the room isn't that great and I've been sick for a week so I feel like hell, but there you go.

The red has suited me and, because it goes well with my pink and pasty Irish skin, it's been easy to stick with.  People always think it's my natural color, which is great.  But hey, it's not.  I was actually light blonde until I was around three and my natural color is a light-medium brown.  Why not try the other end of the spectrum!

What I'm excited about is seeing it in the day light and then pairing it up with a new color palette.   I've always worn these colors to some degree but I think they are going to look completely new.  I love blacks, charcoals, greys and that woody brown but dark jewel tones like navy, forest green, red, fuchsia and purple are going to stay in the closet too.  On the cool end will be cobalt to ice blues, pale pinks and lavenders.

Once I'm feeling better, I'll take some better pics.

Are you making any big changes for the season?

It's That Time Again

Okay, it's that time again - hair cut and color. And I want to be adventurous but I always chicken out. Will I this time?

I've had my hair red for a good 15+ years, is it time for a change?

Here I am now -

I used a virtual make-over program to "try on" different styles and colors. Here's the base:

Here are my top picks -

Any thoughts? I was considering much darker brown/black than these but the program was not letting me make it that dark. I also did a TON of other ones and put them up on Flickr here.

Whew!

A few months ago I got my hair done and was not happy at all. I'd been getting progressively unhappier with my stylist and this was the last straw. So after months of waiting, I finally made an appointment with a brand new salon and went tonight.

I went in there feeling like I was a big 'ole mess and looking like this:

To coming out feeling as fresh and pretty as this:

I feel like I can finally take a deep breath and relax.

Sigh!

Thanks to my new salon for taking extra time and providing great care and service!

I want pink hair

Is it wrong to take your hair inspiration from Erin the Esurance secret agent? I even like her haircut! Wouldn't that be awesome? I would really look like Poochie then.

One of my favorite bloggers, Gala at Icing has done her hair this way and looks so cute on her!

But I'm not sure my boss or my clients would be really down with this new look. Hmmmm.... what do you think?
